Yep, more eGuide!

It's that time again-- here are my latest sketches for the newest edition of eGuide. I honestly prefer them like this rather than when I colour them. Does anyone ever feel like incomplete work just has that...'umph', that 'character' and life that is completely removed once coloured? I certainly do-- and sometimes I feel like I'm guilty of that. Oh well. :) Happy thoughts, happy thoughts....
Hmm... Anyways, here the are. ;)

i know how you feel... i love going to the comic store and finding the 'sketch' versions of the comic. To many artists often spoil the life that was once there in the sketch.

I have the same thing! I love to see the lining, extra shadings. it gives more character to a drawing. Sometimes I gave a illustration to a friend, the rough sketching. I loved it, but my friend, although she really loved it, she really wanted a colored one. I don't mind coloring them, but for some reason this spark, this extra element is gone once I give it color ^_^'.

I love your work here! It's a cute couple haha!

I agree with you Abz. That's why most of the time I prefer to keep my stuff in pencil and colored pencil to keep that energy. Same goes when I ink I try to keep everything sweepy so I never lose that energy. But that's one thing I'm really trying to learn. How I can clean something up without losing the feeling the drawing had when I first put pencil to paper. Love the drawings as well by the way.

Hi there Abz,
It is really a challenge to keep the freshness still going as you start to clean it up.
It almost feels like you lose the organic quality of it as it becomes more commercial (if you get what I mean).
I'll admit I haven't quite found a happy balance as there is always that trade off.
You just can't beat pencil work aye.
Love the composition of the 1st drawing, especially with the dress - how it draws your eye into the pic.

Also I apologize in advance as you left a message on my blog and I replied...on my own blog (doh)...I'm still learning so please forgive me.

Cheers

Really great work here Abz!

I hear you loud and clear. For years I struggled with my art, in fact, I ended up switching directions and leaving the world of cartooning for a life in photography. I was so frustrated with my lack of talent. I always enjoyed my quick 'n dirty doodles in my sketchbook, but whenever I had to do a "finished" piece I'd practically self destruct. I would lose all the life in my lines and the end result looked nothing at all like the fun and loose scribble in my sketchbook.

I've recently come to grips with my limited artistic abilities, and I simply doodle, and that initial doodle is the end product.

I know what you mean...happens to me all the time. Thank God for the undo button!

I guess everyone's generally happier with preliminary sketches than with the final colored artwork. We all share the pain:)
Great work by the way! I really like the lines a lot.

I love colouring in but best of all for me is indian ink and a raspy pen. Nice work you do. Greetings to Bloor Street.
